TikTok Direct Post goes live, with private-only posting for unaudited apps
What changed
The Direct Post API went live on June 7, 2023, letting creators post to their account directly from an app. TikTok's docs state that all content posted by unaudited clients is restricted to private viewing mode, and unaudited clients can only post to private accounts. The init endpoint allows 6 requests per minute per user access token, the creator info endpoint 20 per minute, and a daily post cap per creator applies, with the number not stated.
What it means
Apps can publish straight to a creator's account, but content from an app that has not passed TikTok's audit is limited to private viewing.
Who is affected
Scheduling tools that auto-publish to TikTok and the creators using them.
What to do by 7 Jun 2023
Request video.publish, enable Direct Post for the Content Posting API in the app settings and pass TikTok's audit of your client before expecting public posts. Respect the 6 requests per minute limit per user token on the init endpoint.
Error codes worth handling include spam_risk_too_many_posts (daily cap reached), reached_active_user_cap (the client's daily quota of active publishing users) and unaudited_client_can_only_post_to_private_accounts.
