YouTube lifts the private-only rule for uploads from unverified API projects
What changed
YouTube's November 2, 2026 Data API revision says videos uploaded through videos.insert from unverified API projects are no longer restricted to private viewing. It reverses the July 28, 2020 policy, which kept such uploads private until the project passed a compliance audit. If status.privacyStatus is not set, the video now defaults to public, though some uploads default to private based on creator account settings: YouTube Help says creators aged 13 to 17 default to private.
What it means
Videos uploaded with videos.insert from API projects that never passed YouTube's audit can now be public. Without a privacyStatus in the request, they default to public.
Who is affected
Developers of small or in-house YouTube scheduling tools and scripts, and anyone who tests uploads from a development project.
What to do by 2 Nov 2026
Always set status.privacyStatus explicitly in videos.insert. Test projects that relied on the private lock will now publish publicly by default.
What this means for you
Since 2020, a new YouTube app had to pass a check by YouTube before the videos it uploaded could be seen by anyone. Until then, every upload was stuck on private. YouTube has dropped that rule. Now a small or home-made scheduling app can post public videos right away. The flip side: if the app doesn't say "private", the video goes out public.
The details
- What changed:
videos.insertuploads from unverified API projects are "no longer restricted to private viewing mode", per the November 2, 2026 revision history entry. - What it reverses: the July 28, 2020 policy. It applied to unverified projects created after that date and kept their uploads private until the project completed a compliance audit against the YouTube API Services Terms of Service. Projects created before July 28, 2020 were not affected by it.
- The new default: if a
videos.insertrequest doesn't setstatus.privacyStatus, the video "defaults topublic". - The exception: some uploads still default to
privatebecause of the creator's account settings. YouTube Help says the default privacy setting for creators aged 13 to 17 is private; 18 and over is public. - Not mentioned: the entry says nothing about quotas or the API Terms of Service. Upload quota costs are covered in our quota entry.
What to do next
- Business owners: Nothing, unless you use a small or self-built tool to post to YouTube: its uploads may now go public without the old wait.
- Marketers and agencies: Check that scheduled YouTube uploads use the privacy setting you expect, especially from newer or smaller tools.
- Developers: Set
status.privacyStatuson everyvideos.insertcall, and useprivateorunlistedin test projects so test uploads don't go public.
