AT Protocol Spaces alpha opens for non-public data
What changed
On August 20, 2026 the AT Protocol team announced the alpha of Spaces, an extension for storing and syncing non-public data, formerly called the permissioned data protocol. A space is a gated mini-network with access control but no encryption, and space data has no relay. The alpha PDS will be removed at the end of the alpha, and a full release is aimed for later this year.
What it means
Developers can experiment with gated, non-public data on the AT Protocol, but must not use it in production.
Who is affected
Developers building on the AT Protocol. Posting to public Bluesky feeds is not affected.
What to do
Experiment with test data only. The post warns of breaking changes and says not to run production code against the alpha.
