How to schedule Instagram posts (free, in the app, in 2026)
Instagram now lets you schedule posts, reels and carousels up to 30 days ahead for free, right in the app. What you can schedule, what you can't, and when a scheduler is worth it.
The short version
You no longer need a tool to schedule a normal Instagram post. The Instagram app schedules posts, reels and carousels up to 30 days ahead, for free. You need something more only for stories (without a subscription), for posting further ahead, or for scheduling to several networks at once.
Schedule a post in the Instagram app
- Create your post, reel or carousel as usual.
- In the post's options, turn on scheduling.
- Pick a date and time, or one of the suggested times.
- Tap Schedule.
Meta describes this as available to eligible public Instagram accounts. It does not say whether a personal account qualifies or whether you need a professional (creator or business) account, so if you don't see the option, switching to a professional account is the first thing to try.
What you can't schedule
Meta lists four things that don't work with scheduled content:
- product tags
- collaborative posts (collabs)
- paid partnership labels
- fundraisers
Publish those posts manually.
Scheduling further ahead, and stories
- More than 30 days ahead: a paid Meta One plan (Advanced, Expert or Max) lets eligible public accounts schedule posts, reels and carousels up to 365 days ahead. Meta notes this is not available to teens.
- Stories: can be scheduled up to 30 days ahead, but scheduling stories in the app needs a Meta One subscription.
Using Meta Business Suite instead
Meta Business Suite schedules posts and stories to Facebook, Instagram or both, from the Planner (the calendar) on desktop or Schedule for later in the mobile app. It is free and useful if you post the same thing to a Facebook Page.
For Facebook Page posts, Meta says you can schedule between 20 minutes and 29 days ahead. Meta's help pages don't state a separate maximum for Instagram content in Business Suite. Guides elsewhere quote 29, 30 or 75 days, but we could not confirm any of them.
When a scheduler is worth it
Third-party schedulers post through Instagram's publishing API. That has two practical consequences:
- You need a professional account. The API only publishes for creator and business accounts.
- There is a daily cap: 100 API-published posts per account in a rolling 24 hours, with a carousel counting as one. Few people hit it.
A scheduler pays off when you post to several networks, want one calendar for all of them, or need stories without a Meta One subscription. Compare options in the scheduler directory, or let the picker rank them for your networks and budget. Before you post, check your caption length and hashtags: Instagram now allows 5 hashtags per post, and the hashtag formatter flags anything over that.
Questions people ask
How far ahead can I schedule on Instagram for free?
Up to 30 days ahead in the Instagram app. A paid Meta One plan (Advanced, Expert or Max) extends that to 365 days for eligible public accounts.
Can I schedule Instagram stories?
Yes, up to 30 days ahead, but in-app story scheduling needs a Meta One subscription (Advanced, Expert or Max). Meta Business Suite can also schedule stories.
Do third-party schedulers need a professional account?
Yes. Instagram's publishing API, which every third-party scheduler uses, only works with professional (creator or business) accounts.
