Instagram API versions: what replaced v1 and Basic Display
Basic Display has failed since December 2024 and v1.0 was deprecated in January 2025. What replaced them, a dated timeline of every change and what to do.
Two APIs replaced the old Instagram ones: the Instagram API with Instagram Login, launched on July 23, 2024, and the Instagram API with Facebook Login, both for Professional (Business or Creator) accounts. The Basic Display API has returned errors on every request since December 4, 2024, and the Instagram v1.0 API was deprecated on January 21, 2025.
This page covers the Instagram changes documented in our API changelog, with a link to each entry. The Graph API version numbers and their end dates are on a separate page: Meta Graph API versions.
What this means for you
If an app once showed your Instagram photos on a website, or a tool read a personal account, it probably used Basic Display, and that stopped working at the end of 2024. Today every tool that posts to Instagram or reads its numbers needs a Business or Creator account.
Since July 2024, a tool can also connect your Instagram account without a Facebook Page, as long as it supports the newer login. Many of the changes after that renamed or removed statistics, so if your Instagram reports look different, check the metric list below.
The timeline, change by change
The two replacements and what they ended
- July 23, 2024: Meta launched the Instagram API with Instagram Login. No Facebook Page is needed, calls go to
graph.instagram.com, and Instagram messaging no longer goes through the Messenger API. Entry - September 17, 2024: new permission names for Instagram Login:
instagram_business_basic,instagram_business_content_publish,instagram_business_manage_commentsandinstagram_business_manage_messages. The old values were deprecated on January 27, 2025, after a correction moved the date from December 17, 2024. Entry - December 4, 2024: the Basic Display API was deprecated, and all its requests return errors. Meta's entry names no API replacement for personal accounts. Entry
- January 21, 2025: the Instagram v1.0 API was deprecated, about 30 endpoints for users, media, comments, carousels, Pages, business assets and ad accounts. The v22.0 changelog lists the all-versions cutoff as both April 21, 2025 and May 20, 2025, so we don't pick one. The replacements are IG User, IG Media, IG Media Children, IG Comment and IG Comment Replies. Entry
Publishing changes
- June 28, 2022: Reels publishing arrived, with
media_typeset toREELS. TheVIDEOmedia type stopped working on November 9, 2023. Entry - December 3, 2025: Trial Reels through an optional
trial_paramsobject, andDELETE /{ig_media_id}to remove posts, carousels, reels and stories (needsinstagram_manage_contents). Entry - April 22, 2026: a Like API, a Collaborative Media API and a paid partnership label at publish time (
is_paid_partnership, up to 2 brand IDs). Entry - June 1, 2026: the Instagram Audio API (Facebook Login) attaches music and original sounds to Reels. Entry
- June 22, 2026:
is_ai_generatedapplies the AI info label, with both logins. Entry - July 30, 2026: IG Media leaves out
media_urlfor protected or download-disabled media, while the request still returns 200. Entry
Metric deprecations
- September 12, 2023: the
AUDIENCE_GENDER_AGE,AUDIENCE_LOCALE,AUDIENCE_COUNTRYandAUDIENCE_CITYuser metrics, theCAROUSEL_ALBUM_*family,TAPS_FORWARD,TAPS_BACK,EXITSandENGAGEMENTwere deprecated. No separate effective date is stated. Entry - May 21, 2024:
last_14_days,last_30_days,last_90_daysandprev_monthwere removed from audience demographics for v20.0 and later, and for all versions on August 19, 2024. Entry - October 2, 2024:
profile_views,website_clicks,email_contacts,get_direction_clicks,text_message_clicks,phone_call_clicksand mediavideo_viewswere removed for v21.0 and later, and for all versions on January 8, 2025. Entry - January 21, 2025: a new
viewsmetric replacedimpressions,plays,clips_replays_countandig_reels_aggregated_all_plays_count, for all versions from April 21, 2025. Insights also became available to apps using Instagram Login. Entry - April 8, 2025: Meta oEmbed Read replaced oEmbed Read, and the author and thumbnail fields left Instagram post oEmbed responses on November 3, 2025. Entry
- December 3, 2025: new metrics rather than removals:
reels_skip_rate,reposts,crossposted_viewsandfacebook_views. Entry
Which login a tool uses still matters
The two APIs are not identical. Some features in our entries are marked Facebook Login only: the Audio API, and the reposts_count, saved_count and shares_count fields added on April 22, 2026. Others, such as is_ai_generated, work with both. So two schedulers that both "support Instagram" can offer different features, depending on which login they built on. Everything else about posting to Instagram is on the Instagram hub.
What to do next
- Business owners: Make sure your Instagram account is a Business or Creator account. If a website widget or old app stopped showing your posts around December 2024, Basic Display is the likely cause, and it needs replacing.
- Marketers and agencies: Report
viewsinstead of impressions or plays, and note that long-running charts can break at January 8 and April 21, 2025, when metrics were removed. If a feature is missing, ask the tool whether it uses Instagram Login or Facebook Login. - Developers: Remove any v1.0 endpoints, Basic Display calls and old scope values. Request the
instagram_business_*scopes, treatmedia_urlas optional, and check the changelog for anything newer than this page.
Questions people ask
Does the Instagram Basic Display API still work?
No. Meta's Instagram changelog lists Basic Display as deprecated on December 4, 2024, and all its requests return errors. Tools have to use the Instagram API with Instagram Login or with Facebook Login, and both need a Business or Creator account.
What replaced the Instagram v1 API?
The Instagram Platform endpoints: IG User, IG Media, IG Media Children, IG Comment and IG Comment Replies. Meta deprecated v1.0, about 30 endpoints, on January 21, 2025, but its v22.0 changelog gives two cutoff dates for all versions, April 21 and May 20, 2025.
Do I need a Facebook Page to connect Instagram to a scheduler?
Not with the Instagram API with Instagram Login, which Meta launched on July 23, 2024. Your Instagram account still has to be a Professional account, and the tool has to support that login type.
Can an app still connect a personal Instagram account?
Not through the APIs in our changelog. Basic Display was the route for personal accounts, and the changelog entry for its end names no API replacement for them. Switching to a Business or Creator account is the way back in.
